Gurteen College is a registered charity founded in 1947, offering a range of recognised Teagasc and other courses to people who intend making a career in either agriculture, equines or related services.

Its mission is to provide its students with training and education to make a better living in rural Ireland.

It is just off the N52, between Birr (Co. Offaly) and Nenagh (Co. Tipperary), 

Free transport is available from the college to Birr for National connecting bus routes on a Friday lunch time.

 

 

GURTEEN COLLEGE FARM The college farms is the largest agricultural farm in Ireland with over 380 hectaresincluding dairy, beef, sheep, horses, machinery, tillage and forestry.

GURTEEN FARM There are 95 Pedigree Fresian cows producing 600,000 litres of milk. The college is in the planning stages of expanding the herd to 220 cows and building a new dairy. Some 50% of the cows are served by AI. The rest are served by the Limousin stock bull. There are 50 suckler cows supplying Charolais cross calves to a 200 head beef unit. Various finishing systems including bull beef are demonstrated to the students, we use a Keenan feeding system and diet feeder. The college has 650 Suffolk cross ewes which are mostly lambed mid-season, inside a dedicated sheep unit area. The ewes are mated to Suffolk, Texel and Charollais rams.There are 100 hectares in tillage crops including barley, fodder beet, maize, oats and wheat. The farm machinery is extensive, we have a tractor fleet New this year New Hollands T6. 180, T6. 175, T6. 145 x 2 and a T6. 140 joining our JCB TM 320, a Ford, Fiat and Massey Ferguson.

DEMO BUILDING Includes extensive modern state of the art, three, workshops and demo machinery areas, large enough for any size of farm machinery, two workshops are used to explore and understand how gear boxes and engines work. There are ventilated workbays welding area 10 STICK, 3 MIG, 1 TIG and a plasma cutter. The animal demo handling area includes a double sided cattle crush and weighing scales for monitoring and checking performance.  

CAMPUS FACILITIES There are 90 single bedrooms in the main block of the college, with further accommodation available in Gurteen House; three comfortable student common rooms with a mix of large screen TVs with SKY and DVD, indoor pool tables, table top football and vending machines. Students have the option to live on or off site. Recreational facilities at the college include an outdoor heated swimming pool, pitches for hurling, football and rugby, floodlit tennis and basketball courts, sports hall with two badminton courts, indoor soccer, table tennis and full sized snooker table. We have an excellent canteen offering great selection of meals throughout the day. WIFI is available. Students can make their own tea or coffee, no charge, student clothes washing and drying facilities are available, free of charge also. Students can have their own lockers on site.

EQUINE The facilities include 45 loose boxes, tack room, indoor and outdoor arenas, cross country course (1.5 miles), horse walker, washbays, indoor classrooms, outdoor teaching areas, rug/ washing horseware drying room, a rug,feed and store room. All horses (approx. 30 selected annually on loan) are used as a teaching resource for both the Higher Certificate in Business in Equine Studies and the Bachelor of Business in Equine Studies courses, which are run in conjunction with Athlone IT. Some of the college horses compete in team showjumping, eventing and dressage. DIY facilities livery available for student's own horses.

TEACHING The college day consists of half academic and half practical learning.
Gurteen has an excellent committed experieced teaching team at Gurteen College, with a pro-active Principal at the head. Teagasc and Gurteen staff deliver the course content and practical demonstrations. There are two IT labs with 18 computers each, including a teaching computer linked to a projector. There is a lecture theatre and hall able to accomodate large numbers, both including a teaching computer linked to a projector. We offer a learning support package if required in conjunction with Teagasc.
