Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture Application Form  

This one-year full-time course aims to provide students with a quality practical agricultural education. It prepares graduates for farming, further training in farm management, farm work abroad and careers in agri-industry. The course has a high practical content, and students spend about half the day on farm practical and skills training and half the day in lectures. 

Entry requirements:   Applicants must be 17 years of age on or before 1st January following their date of entry - therefore the youngest students are at least 16 3/4years old on commencement of the course in September.

The Leaving Certificate is not essential but strongly recommended.

 

Course content:

(a) Examples of modules (subjects) studied:-

Animal Production Science and Crop Production Science, Farm Business Organisation, Leadership

(b) Students choose from two of the following modules:

Dairy, Beef, Sheep, Crop Production and Tractor Driving 

(c) Then other modules may be chosen

Maintenance of Farm Structures, Crop Establishment Equipment, Chemical Fertiliser Application

(d) There is a 3month period of practical training on a registered host farm. 

Course costs 2016-17

Residential Student (including full board)  €5,160

Day Student € 2,100

(These figures include application fee, Teagasc course fee and workbook costs, meals where applicable and college facilities fee)

Means tested grants are available from Teagasc, 

Scholarships are available from some Co-Ops. Apply to your Co-Op

A pass or above is required at level 5 to progress to:

Level 6 Special Purpose Certificate Certificate in Agriculture (Gurteen College)


A merit or above at Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture to progress to:

Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Agriculture  (Gurteen College)

                         OPTIONS  - Dairy Herd Management / Drystock Management / Crops and Bio Energy 

These courses are designed to train young people for agriculture and the agri-business sector.

Career opportunities:  Farming/ Agri. Services /or Sales/  Dairy Industry- Co-Op or Sales/ Machinery Industry- Sales/ Stores/ Beef Industry/ Quality Assurance, Procurement Officer/ Meat Factory Inspector/ Dept. of Agriculture/ Soil sampling, grass measurement and growth/ Further Education
