Higher Certificate in Business in Equine

Athlone Institute of Technology offers a Higher Certificate in Business in Equine (Level 6) in association with Gurteen College. Students learn business skills vital to a successful career in the equine industry. The Higher Certificate in Business in Equine involves considerable time dedicated to practical sessions with the horses in the equine facilities on campus at Gurteen College. These practical sessions develop the student’s skills in equitation, the care of horses and stable yard management. In the first year students undertake an ‘Equine Work Experience’ module which involves the daily care of the horses under supervision at Gurteen College. This enables students to develop their practical horse care skills to a high standard during their time at college.

The wide variety of modules undertaken by students on the Higher Certificate in Business in Equine allows students to discover the area of the equine industry in which they are most interested in developing a career. Graduates have progressed to careers in a wide variety of sectors within the equine industry both in Ireland and internationally including stud farm management, lecturing, bloodstock sales and the tourism sector. Graduates are well qualified to work in administration with industry governing bodies such as Horse Sport Ireland and its affiliates. Many graduates have been employed by leading industry organisations such as Coolmore and Darley. This course enables students to develop the skills required to successfully run their own equestrian business involving managing a livery yard and producing sport horses for competition. Some students choose to continue their education to specialise in areas such as equine dentistry and farriery using the competencies developed on this course to enable them to manage their own business successfully. With such a sizeable focus on business within this course graduates also have the option to move more towards a career in business unrelated to the equine industry.

Upon successful completion of the Higher Certificate in Business in Equine, graduates have the option to continue their education with a further one-year add-on course - Bachelor of Business in Equine (Level 7). This course is offered by Athlone Institute of Technology in association with Gurteen College.
