Ger Carey is Gurteen College's Herds Person /Dry Stock Unit Manager and has been here for 18 years.
Work on a daily basis involves him working with all staff members , stock and students.
Livestock is a full time ongoing job. There are at present 550 breeding ewes, 900 lambs,70 suckler cows and 70 calves. Students who attend Gurteen College are involved in lambing, calving and animal husbandry alongside Ger.
Students can look forward to gaining practical experience in grass land management eg rotating and strip grazing, dosing stock, vaccinating stock, handling and managing cattle and sheep, weighing lambs and beef cattle, feeding stock, herding and the breeding strategies on sheep and cows.
Students play an important role on a working farm. Their education on the practical side of the daily tasks on Gurteen Farm are an essential part of Ger’s day.
