About Us
Gurteen College, established in 1947, is nationally recognised as a specialist College focused on the delivery of education and training to the farming sector. The impressive rural campus is nestled in the beautiful countryside of North Tipperary, with the 386 hectare farm providing a superb outdoor classroom where our students can hone their practical skills, and develop their knowledge and understanding of farming and the wider aspects of countryside management. The farm includes a wide range of commercial enterprises, with 240 dairy cows, 70 suckler cows, over 100 beef finishing animals, a 450 ewe sheep flock, 32 ha of short rotation coppice willow and 40 ha of tillage crops. These commercial enterprises sit alongside forestry, broad-leaved native woodland, bog and a lough, which together with the extensive network of hedgerows provide a rich and varied natural habitat.
Gurteen College provides a high-quality education to students from across Ireland, our courses range from Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture through to Level 8 Honours Degree in Agricultural Science and Sustainability. Our students share a passion for agriculture and all things relating to the countryside, they range in age from school leavers to adults, with each individual looking to develop their skills and improve their knowledge. Over the past 5 years we have welcomed full time students from 26 different counties; those from afar tend to live on campus - taking advantage of our student accommodation - and more local students travel daily instead if they wish. Evening classes and distance education classes are available for adult learners.
Graduates of Gurteen can be found in every parish of Ireland - many proudly working on farms, while some choose a different career path occupying very high-profile roles in politics, the media, academia, and commerce; they all share a pride in their link to Gurteen, each making a positive contribution to their local community. Founded in 1947 by a group of Methodist farmers and ministers, Gurteen a has long and proud ethos of serving the needs of all its students.
