Welcome to our Level 5 Certificate in Stud Management, your gateway to a fulfilling career in the equine industry. This highly practical course provides hands-on training for people who want to develop a career in the breeding and sales of horses within the equine industry. 

Our program provides hands-on training for those passionate about the equine world. Focusing on horse care, welfare, and breeding techniques, we prepare you for responsible positions within the industry, gaining experience in breeding, young stock production and the management of an equine enterprise.

This course, accredited by QQI, is the introductory course for young people who wish to make their career in the equine industry or gain a deeper understanding of managing and handling horses.

Graduates can advance to our Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Stud Management or transfer to linked courses at Institutes of Technology through the Higher Education Links Scheme.

 

Course Structure

The Stud Management Course course subjects equip students with the knowledge and skills to find employment in responsible positions in the equine industry, gaining experience in breeding, young stock production and the management of an equine enterprise.

 

Course Subjects

  • Horse Breeding: Learn the fundamentals of horse breeding, covering reproductive physiology, genetic principles, and pedigree analysis to produce top-quality horses.

  • Equine Business: Acquire foundational knowledge of marketing, sales, financial management, and legal considerations specific to stud management and horse breeding enterprises.

  • Stud Pasture Management: Understand pasture establishment, forage selection, grazing management, and pasture maintenance techniques to support equine health and nutrition.

  • Anatomy and Physiology: Explore the horse's musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems to recognise signs of illness and injury.

  • Conformation and Evaluation: Develop skills in assessing equine conformation and performance prospects, essential for identifying breeding stock and evaluating athletic potential.

  • Personal and Professional Development: Enhance communication, leadership, and decision-making skills essential for success in stud management and related roles.

  • Work Practice: Gain practical experience in horse handling and farm management through work placements, developing essential workplace skills under professional guidance.

 

Awards

Upon successful completion, students are awarded the QQI Level 5 Certificate in Stud Management.

Graduates have the opportunity to progress to a Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Stud Management course. Level 6 courses available at Gurteen College include:

 

Additionally, graduates are eligible transfer to linked courses at Institutes of Technology through the Higher Education Links Scheme.

 

Duration & Schedule

This full-time course spans one academic year.

 

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be 17 years old or older as of January 1st following entry to Year 1. 

  • Students with a Level 5 equivalent qualification from another provider may apply for entry to the Level 6 program.

The next intake for the course is scheduled for September 2024.

 

Application Details

Applications are accessible online via the Gurteen College website or directly through the Teagasc website. Applicants are required to submit the following documents:

  • Proof of PPS Number (a formal document or card displaying your PPSN)

  • Proof of Name and Date of Birth (preferably a Birth Certificate or Passport)

  • Driving Licence (front and back) if applicable

  • Medical Card (front and back) if applicable

We recommend saving photos of the required documents to your device (laptop or PC) for easy uploading during the application process.

 

Tuition Fees

Gurteen College offers on-site residential accommodation for students who prefer to stay on campus. Residential students are required to ensure they pay the correct amount for accommodation when the first instalment of fees is due.

The costs for Gurteen's courses are all-inclusive, covering meals, printing, workbooks, WiFi, utilities, access to the student kitchen, and use of on-site sporting facilities.

The total cost for the Level 6 (full-time) advanced course for the 2024-25 academic year is €5800 for residential students and €1750 for non-residential students. Tuition fees are divided into two instalments, with payments due on specified dates:

 

Residential - Total Cost €5800 

  1. €3200 due on or before 18th August 2024

  2. €2600 due on or before 1st December 2024

 

Non-Residential - Total Cost €1750

  1. €1200 due on or before 18th August 2024

  2. €550 due on or before 1st December 2024
